For 90 years, Langham Court Theatre has presented nearly 3000 performances with 4000 actors in over 500 shows to 250,000 guests. Established in 1929, the theatre today plays to packed audiences and, thanks to its assiduous members, an enthusiastic local theatre community, the talented artistic team, and the generous support of the Victoria Foundation, is one of Canada’s leading community theatres. The building–which is haunted by a ghost known as the Lady of the Loft–sits on the carriage house and barn of the Robert Ward family estate and has undergone several key renovations which lends it a unique charm. It is conveniently located a ten minute walk away from downtown Victoria in the historic Rockland neighbourhood next to the Victoria Art Gallery and the Government House of British Columbia.
Victoria is the capital city of beautiful British Columbia, the westernmost of Canada’s ten provinces. It is located on the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island (comparable in size to the Netherlands or Taiwan). Seattle and Vancouver are both short fairy rides away. Victoria has a population of 370,000 which is rapidly growing. Tourists and students, as they discover this hidden paradise which offers the mildest climate in Canada, miles of coastline, and hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails through temperate rainforest, make plans to stay.
Langham Court Theatre seats 177, offers 6 productions per year, and boasts excellent sightlines from every seat. Guests have access to a licensed lounge ($5 glasses of wine!) during intermissions and receptions. The theatre acknowledges that it is located on the traditional territories of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations.
To bring you the most vibrant and engaging entertainment, the Langham artistic team has never been afraid to take risk, whether by championing talented emerging playwrights or by broadening the repertoire to include musicals. And so, it is with great pleasure that Langham Court Theatre proudly presents the 2019 Risk Theatre Modern Tragedy Competition. Dramatists, write us your plays!
